Rain Back in Ahmedabad For Second Day as Heavy Downpours Batter Gujarat Talukas

Intense downpours pounded Ahmedabad and several central and southern Gujarat talukas on Sunday, as three active weather systems triggered widespread rainfall after a prolonged dry spell. Dark storm clouds blanketed the skies over Ahmedabad early in the day, reducing visibility before heavy rain lashed major corridors across the city.

Teams of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have taken to the streets as waterlogging was reported in Ghatlodia, Thaltej, Science City Road, Saijpur and other parts of the city. Civic teams are working to clear the accumulated water and restore normal movement.

Mithakhali underpass was closed at 4.40 as a safety measure.

West zone of Ahmedabad received the highest rainfall between 6 am and 5 pm today, with Motera receiving the highest 56 mm of rain.

The rainfall caused waterlogging along arterial city roads, disrupting afternoon traffic and stranding commuters across key intersections. Rural districts and agricultural pockets across Saurashtra and South Gujarat also registered substantial rainfall, bringing much-needed relief to farmers worried about standing crops.

Three Weather Systems Active Simultaneously

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) updates, the sudden surge in monsoon activity follows the activation of three concurrent weather systems over the region. A low-pressure area moving across the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border, coupled with a cyclonic circulation, has drawn heavy moisture from the Arabian Sea directly into Gujarat.

The weather office issued yellow alerts across multiple districts, warning of intense spells accompanied by lightning and gusty winds over the next 48 hours.

Relief for Farmers Amid Urban Disruptions

While city dwellers navigated submerged roads and slowed traffic in low-lying urban pockets, rural belts welcomed the downpours. Several talukas across Narmada, Bharuch, Devbhumi Dwarka, and surrounding districts had faced an extended dry spell over the past month.

The revival of the monsoon spell is expected to replenish dwindling groundwater levels and safeguard kharif crops—particularly cotton, groundnut, and sugarcane—during a critical growth stage.

IMD Warning Issued for Coming Days

Meteorological officials have urged civic authorities to monitor drainage networks in major urban centres, including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat, to handle sudden surges in surface run-off.

Residents have been advised to avoid taking shelter under isolated trees during lightning strikes and to keep track of local weather bulletins as the rain systems move across northern and central parts of the state through mid-week.
