Sinkholes Emerge In Ahmedabad's Manekbag, Nikol Amid Rain; AMC Erects Barricades

Road subsidence at two locations in Ahmedabad's Manekbag and Nikol areas has raised concerns for motorists amid rainy weather, prompting the municipal authorities to barricade the affected stretches and begin repair work.

A sinkhole appeared on the road near Manekbag Crossroads, while a section of the main road near Bhakti Circle in Nikol caved in following a water pipeline rupture on Monday morning.

Sinkhole And Sunken Manhole At Manekbag

After the sinkhole was reported near Manekbag Crossroads, an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) team reached the spot and installed barricades to prevent accidents.

However, officials also found that a manhole cover around 10 feet from the sinkhole had subsided.

With the sinkhole on one side of the road and the sunken manhole cover on the other, the stretch poses an additional risk to motorists.

The AMC's West Zone engineering department will now also have to undertake repairs to the damaged manhole cover.

Road Caves In After Pipeline Bursts In Nikol

A larger depression was reported on a main road near Bhakti Circle in Nikol, which falls under the AMC's East Zone.

According to the information available, a water pipeline running beneath the road ruptured early on September 21. Following the rupture, part of the road caved in, creating a large pothole or sinkhole on the main carriageway.

Local residents alerted the municipal authorities, following which a civic team reached the location and barricaded the affected portion.

Repair work has since been initiated at the Nikol site.

The incidents have once again highlighted the vulnerability of city roads to subsidence and damage during the rainy season.
