Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot is being upgraded with a ₹307-crore maintenance hub for modern trains, including 24-coach Vande Bharat trainsets, reducing the need to send them elsewhere for major maintenance.
Western Railway’s Ahmedabad division is developing the facility under Phase 2 of the project. Once operational, the hub will handle scheduled major maintenance of 24-coach Vande Bharat trains, with dedicated infrastructure for coach repairs, wheel servicing and electrical equipment maintenance.
Construction of several key facilities has been completed, while work on others is nearing completion.
Maintenance of 24-Coach Trains in 30-45 Days
The hub is being equipped to carry out Schedule-I (SS-I) and Schedule-II (SS-II) maintenance of 24-coach Vande Bharat trainsets.
As per the planned capacity, SS-I maintenance of a trainset will take around 30 days, while SS-II maintenance will take approximately 45 days. The facility is expected to handle SS-I maintenance for around 12 trainsets or SS-II maintenance for eight trainsets annually.
Wheel Care Shed Completed
Construction of the 75-metre-by-40-metre wheel care shed has been completed. The facility will handle the overhauling, resurfacing and turning of wheels and axles.
It will be equipped with modern machinery, including a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) surface wheel lathe, CNC axle turning lathe, dynamic wheel balancing machine and hydraulic wheel press.
These facilities will enable specialised wheel and axle maintenance at the depot.
Heavy Repair Shed Nearing Completion
Construction of the 322-metre-long and 25-metre-wide heavy repair shed is almost complete. The shed will have two maintenance lines for different repair requirements.
One line will feature synchronised pit jacks to lift coaches and remove bogies for maintenance. The second will be used to service coach interiors, passenger amenities, braking systems and other electrical equipment.
Dedicated Facility for Technical Equipment
A separate section shed measuring 322 metres by 20 metres is being developed to handle major train components.
The facility will support the dismantling, repair and reassembly of traction transformers, traction converters, traction motors, auxiliary converters, pantographs and roof-mounted package units (RMPUs).
The specialised infrastructure is intended to allow a wider range of technical repairs to be carried out at Sabarmati.
Track Infrastructure and Electrical Facilities
Work on the depot’s track infrastructure has also progressed. Rail linking across four stabling lines, covering a total length of 2,547 metres, has been completed.
Construction of the 30-metre-by-20-metre electrical substation (ESS) building has also been completed.
Once operational, the ₹307-crore hub will expand Sabarmati depot’s capacity to maintain Vande Bharat trainsets, bringing several major maintenance and repair operations under one facility.
