Red Alert in Ahmedabad: IMD Warns of Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds

Ahmedabad has been placed under a red warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms, according to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) nowcast issued at 10 am on September 14, 2026. The warning is valid for the next three hours.

The IMD has warned of heavy rain exceeding 15 mm per hour at isolated places in Ahmedabad, accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and surface winds reaching 41-61 kmph in gusts. The probability of cloud-to-ground lightning has been assessed at more than 60%.

19 other districts under heavy-rain warning

Along with Ahmedabad, the heavy-rain warning covers Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Surendranagar, Morbi, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, Anand, Kheda, Aravalli, Mehsana, Rajkot, Botad, Amreli, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Diu, Jamnagar and Bharuch.

Several other parts of Gujarat are under a lower-level yellow/watch category, with moderate rain of 5-15 mm per hour, thunderstorms and gusty winds likely at isolated places. These include Banaskantha, Patan, Kachchh, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari and Valsad, besides Daman and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

IMD warns of waterlogging and traffic disruption

For areas experiencing heavy rain, the IMD has warned of waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas, heavy traffic congestion, drain overflow and falling trees or advertising hoardings because of gusty winds.

The department has advised people in affected areas to restrict movement, check traffic conditions before travelling and avoid locations prone to waterlogging. Residents of vulnerable or old structures and areas near rivers and drains have also been advised to take precautions.
