A 28-year-old married woman living in Ahmedabad’s Ramol area has alleged that her husband and mother-in-law subjected her to physical and mental harassment over dowry and her decision to work, with a physical assault during her pregnancy allegedly resulting in a miscarriage.
The woman, who is currently staying with her parents in New Maninagar, has filed a complaint with Ramol police after her husband allegedly left her at her parental home and later refused to take her back.
Harassment Over Dowry, Job
According to the complaint, the woman married the accused man in February 2022 following customary rituals. Five days after the marriage, her mother-in-law allegedly began taunting her over bringing fewer clothes as dowry and also stopped her from using the bathroom on the upper floor.
The woman alleged that both families had agreed before the marriage that she could work. She subsequently took up a job as a teacher at a school in Haripura. However, after her husband’s job was transferred to Vadodara, she had to leave her employment.
The woman further alleged that her husband later objected to her working or taking up work-from-home opportunities in Vadodara and sent her back to her parental home.
Assault Allegedly Led To Pregnancy Loss
The woman was around one-and-a-half months pregnant when she reportedly began experiencing health problems and was unable to carry out household chores. Following an argument with her mother-in-law over the issue, her husband allegedly assaulted her, hitting her on the head and back.
She allegedly began bleeding and was taken to a maternity hospital. A sonography reportedly showed that the pregnancy had moved dangerously low. According to the complaint, doctors subsequently advised termination of the pregnancy due to the risk involved, and she underwent an abortion at around three months of pregnancy.
Husband Allegedly Refused To Take Her Back
The woman further alleged that in November 2025, her husband told her that he did not want to live with her and wanted to marry someone else. He allegedly left her at her parents’ home and subsequently refused to take her back.
Based on her complaint, Ramol police have registered a case against her husband and mother-in-law and begun an investigation.
Gaming And Mental Harassment Allegations
The woman has also alleged that her husband would play online games on his laptop until late at night and did not give her sufficient time. She claimed that repeated sleepless nights affected her health and that she developed PCOD.
According to the complaint, doctors advised her to take rest and suggested that working could help her mental well-being, but her husband allegedly continued playing games and subjecting her to mental harassment.
She also alleged that the couple would quarrel over seemingly minor issues, including eating snacks inside their car while travelling, and that such arguments sometimes escalated into physical assaults at home.
