The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) conducted 25 rapid tests on ghee from 10 brands in Maninagar as part of its Diwali food safety drive. No vegetable fat was detected in the on-site tests, while 11 samples have been sent to the Public Health Laboratory for further analysis.
The Health Department carried out inspections at ghee traders' premises amid concerns over possible adulteration during the festive season. Officials used rapid testing kits to check the samples for vegetable fat.
Although the initial tests showed no signs of vegetable fat adulteration, the AMC has sent samples for detailed laboratory examination. The final assessment will be made after the reports are received.
25 Rapid Tests Conducted on 10 Ghee Brands
The inspection covered brands including Dynamic, Mother Dairy, Shrimant, Ram, Chandramal, Dodla, Nova, Paras and Govardhan.
Officials conducted around 25 rapid tests during the operation. No vegetable fat was detected in any of the on-site tests.
The inspections are part of the AMC's wider Diwali food safety campaign, which covers establishments involved in the production, storage and sale of sweets, mava and ghee.
AMC Seizes 510 Kg of Substandard Mava
In a separate action, the AMC seized 510 kg of substandard mava after testing samples collected from a cold storage facility in Gomtipur.
The Health Department had collected four samples, and laboratory analysis found that the mava supplied by Tulsi Mava Center was substandard. The establishment is located at Ramji Mandir ni Chali, opposite Dada Hari ni Vav in Asarwa.
Further investigation revealed that the mava was manufactured in Vallabhnagar, Udaipur, Rajasthan. The AMC informed the Food and Drugs Departments of Gujarat and Rajasthan to facilitate further action.
The civic body seized the entire 510 kg stock and sealed Tulsi Mava Center. Investigators also found that the establishment supplied mava to seven other businesses in Ahmedabad, including traders in Naroda, Meghaninagar, Nana Chiloda, Khokhra, Nikol and Dahegam Road.
41.4 Kg of Sweets Seized Over Missing Details
The AMC also seized 41.4 kg of sweets stored at a cold storage facility in Gomtipur.
Officials found that products sold under the Rajwadi Sweet (Bajrangi) and Indian Dessert (Nilkanth) brands lacked mandatory details, including batch number, lot number, manufacturing date and expiry date.
The civic body issued a notice to Radhika Food Products under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Further action will be taken after the company submits its response.
How to Check Ghee for Vegetable Fat Adulteration
A rapid chemical test can help identify the possible presence of vegetable fat in ghee. The procedure involves mixing approximately 5 ml of melted ghee with an equal quantity of concentrated hydrochloric acid.
Three to four drops of furfural solution or around 20–25 grains of sugar are then added. The mixture is shaken thoroughly. An immediate red colour indicates possible vegetable fat adulteration.
The test should only be performed by trained personnel using appropriate laboratory safety precautions.
