Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s drive to make the city plastic-free has continued alongside campaigns focused on cleanliness and environmental protection. However, despite restrictions and enforcement, the use of banned plastic remains widespread.
More than 9.56 tonnes of banned plastic was seized from shops across Ahmedabad in one year, highlighting the continued use of plastic despite the restrictions.
1.28 Lakh Notices Issued, ₹3.66 Crore Fines Imposed
The AMC’s Solid Waste Management Department carried out enforcement action between July 2025 and July 2026.
During this period, more than 1.28 lakh shopkeepers were issued notices, while fines exceeding ₹3.66 crore were imposed.
As part of stricter action, 970 establishments were sealed.
The city has a ban on the use, sale and manufacture of single-use plastic bags and other plastic items below 120 microns. Despite this, plastic continues to be used for selling vegetables, fruits and grocery items.
Western Zone Records Highest Fine
According to zone-wise data, the West Zone recorded the highest amount of fines during the enforcement drive.
The North Zone recorded the highest seizure of banned plastic, while the South Zone had the highest number of establishments sealed.
The enforcement drive in the Central and East zones was comparatively weaker.
30 Lakh Cloth Bags Distributed To Families
To encourage citizens to stop asking for plastic bags while shopping, the AMC has distributed 30 lakh cloth bags among 15 lakh families.
AMC Solid Waste Management Department Director Vijay Mistry said the initiative aims to encourage residents to carry cloth bags from home while going to markets.
According to the department, the initiative has helped develop the habit among thousands of families.
Traders Question Why Manufacturing Is Not Stopped
Some traders using plastic bags have questioned why manufacturing is not completely stopped if their use and sale are prohibited.
AMC officials, however, said that action has previously been taken against units manufacturing banned plastic products within Ahmedabad city limits.
According to municipal officials, some manufacturers have shifted their operations outside the city limits, from where banned plastic products are allegedly brought into Ahmedabad.
The AMC has said enforcement against banned plastic use will continue across the city.
