PG Security Guard Strangulates College Student With Wire, Assaults Her in Ahmedabad

In a chilling incident that has raised fresh safety concerns for female students in the city, a 20-year-old interior design student was allegedly choked with a wire and sexually assaulted on the terrace of her paying guest (PG) accommodation in Ahmedabad’s Anandnagar area on Saturday night. The Anandnagar police, alongside the Local Crime Branch and the Crime Branch, launched a massive manhunt deploying over 10 teams and arrested the newly hired security guard early Sunday morning.

The Incident

The victim, a student pursuing interior design at Gujarat University, had gone to the terrace of her PG accommodation for a walk around 9:00 PM on Saturday. The accused, identified as Dharm Singh Ramshankar Singh, a native of Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh, approached her silently from behind.

According to the police complaint, Singh wrapped a wire tightly around the victim's neck to strangle her into submission before forcing her onto the ground. He allegedly assaulted her for over an hour before fleeing the scene. The traumatised victim managed to reach safety and alert residents, who immediately contacted the authorities.

Over 10 Police Teams Nab Accused in Pre-Dawn Crackdown

Recognising the severe nature of the crime, the Ahmedabad Police deployed over 10 specialized teams combining local police, the Local Crime Branch (LCB), and the Ahmedabad Crime Branch. Acting on technical surveillance and human intelligence networks, officers tracked Singh down and took him into custody early Sunday morning.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Singh had joined the PG accommodation as a security guard barely six to seven days prior to the attack.

Cops Probe Background Verification Failures at PG Accommodation

Anandnagar Police have registered a formal case and are currently interrogating the accused. Investigators are scrutinising the management of the PG accommodation to determine whether proper police verification and background checks were carried out before appointing Singh.

Forensic teams and investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the premises, analyzing the wire used in the assault, and recording detailed statements from the victim and PG residents to build a tight prosecution case.
