'Parallel Parking Disqualifies 80%': How Ahmedabad RTO's New AI Track Expelled Unskilled Drivers

One month after the rollout of the Artificial Intelligence-based Automated Driving Test Track (ADTS) at the Ahmedabad Regional Transport Office (RTO), failure rates for four-wheeler applicants have surged past 80%.

Data from the first 30 days reveals that out of 2,060 candidates who took the Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) test, only 358 managed to pass. The resulting pass percentage stands at a paltry 17.38%. Two-wheeler applicants fared significantly better, recording a 73.73% success rate, with 2,548 out of 3,456 candidates clearing their evaluations.

Parallel Parking Proves the Primary Hurdle

The automated system, introduced on 13 July, relies on high-precision sensor arrays and camera tracking to eliminate human bias and flag minor driving errors. RTO officials report that roughly 80% of failing four-wheeler candidates get disqualified during the parallel parking maneuver. For two-wheeler riders, nearly 85% of failures stem from placing a foot on the ground near the final turn of the track.

RTO authorities attribute the sharp drop in four-wheeler clearance rates to three core issues:

• Inadequate Preparation: Applicants routinely arrive without mastering basic vehicle control and spatial judgment.
• Distracted Demo Watching: Candidates frequently ignore the mandatory instructional video shown before the test, often remaining distracted by mobile phones.
• Lack of Rule Familiarity: Drivers struggle with precision maneuvers under strict automated monitoring.

Operations Continue Uninterrupted Through Monsoon

The Ahmedabad RTO currently processes 100 to 110 four-wheeler tests and 160 to 180 two-wheeler tests daily through a token system. Despite heavy monsoon showers over the past month, transport officials confirmed that the AI sensor network has maintained operations without technical glitches, leaving no room for manual intervention or leniency.
