No More Repeated Digging? Ahmedabad Civic Body Unveils Integrated Blueprint For Iconic Roads

In a major overhaul aimed at ending the endless cycle of road digging and delayed infrastructure projects, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has adopted a new integrated approach for developing iconic and precinct roads across the city. Under this revamped strategy, all underground and surface utilities—ranging from water, drainage, and storm-water pipelines to street lighting and green spaces—will be planned and executed simultaneously before laying a single stretch of bitumen or concrete.

Until now, separate departments within the civic body managed road construction, underground utilities, landscaping, and street lighting through individual estimates and independent tender processes. This fragmented execution frequently led to newly built roads being dug up again for utility repairs or line laying, alongside prolonged project timelines. By bringing these departments under a single master plan, the AMC aims to streamline development and eliminate redundant roadworks.

Pedestrian-First Infrastructure And Vibrant Urban Spaces

The new model goes beyond basic asphalt laying to rethink how public spaces in the city function. A key feature includes continuous, pedestrian-friendly footpaths with a minimum width of 1.8 metres, designed alongside structured parking zones to ease traffic congestion.

The corridors will also undergo a visual and functional transformation. Plans feature dedicated medians, decorative lighting, sculptures, vibrant topiary, and custom place-making areas. To improve the urban landscape, the project incorporates water fountains, hardscape plantations, green walls, modernized bus stops, speed direction facilities, four-lane skimming, dedicated selfie points, and organized vending zones equipped with safety structures.

Iscon-Pakwan And Airport-Indira Bridge Corridors Identified

The civic body has identified two major stretches to pioneer this integrated model: the high-density Iscon to Pakwan junction corridor and the vital transit route connecting the Airport to Indira Bridge.

By aligning utility management, traffic flow, illumination, and urban landscaping into a single unified execution plan, the AMC aims to deliver seamless infrastructure that prioritises long-term durability and public convenience.
