Nikol Hit-and-Run Probe: Fortuner Driver Was Drinking Beer While Driving, Six More Cans Found

The investigation into the fatal hit-and-run in Ahmedabad's Nikol area has revealed that Fortuner driver Viral Savjibhai Chaudhary was allegedly drinking beer while driving. A medical examination confirmed alcohol consumption, and police recovered six additional beer cans from his SUV.

The accident occurred on Monday night outside Devsya School, where the Fortuner mounted a footpath and hit a mother and her son who were selling sofa covers. Both died from their injuries.

Two Cases Registered Against Driver

Police detained Chaudhary shortly after the accident and conducted his medical examination during the night. Following confirmation of alcohol consumption, Traffic I Division Police registered a case of culpable homicide. Nikol police also filed a separate case under the Gujarat Prohibition Act.

During questioning, investigators reportedly learnt that Chaudhary, who runs a steel engineering business in Bakrol, regularly consumed alcohol. He allegedly told police that he was returning home from Bakrol after drinking beer when he lost control of the vehicle.

Mother and Son Killed, Customer Injured

The victims were identified as Poonamben Jitendrabhai Nagvadiya and her son Sagar Jitendrabhai. They were selling sofa covers on the footpath outside Devsya School when the Fortuner struck them.

A customer, Kartik Ashokbhai Vasoya, 34, and his wife Snehalben, 34, were standing nearby to purchase the covers. Both were seriously injured and taken to Civil Hospital. Snehalben's condition is currently reported to be stable.

CCTV Captures Fortuner Nearly Hitting Two-Wheeler

CCTV footage recorded shortly before the fatal collision has also emerged. The footage reportedly shows the Fortuner narrowly missing a two-wheeler rider near a crossroads before the vehicle struck the vendors.

Chaudhary has claimed that he was driving at around 40–50 kmph when he lost control. Police have approached the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to establish the SUV's actual speed at the time of the accident.
