The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's Food Department sealed a paying guest (PG) facility on Ashram Road after finding mouldy bread, expired sauce and large ants in its kitchen during an inspection. The facility reportedly served food to around 150 to 200 students and working professionals every day.
The civic body also sealed five non-vegetarian food shops in Dudheshwar and Shahibaug for allegedly operating without mandatory FSSAI registration or licences and for failing to meet hygiene requirements.
Sunrise Living PG Sealed After Kitchen Inspection
The action was taken at Sunrise Living PG, located on Ashram Road in Navrangpura, opposite the Gujarat Tourism office and Bata showroom.
During the inspection, Food Department officials found that kitchen workers were not wearing essential protective gear such as caps, aprons and gloves.
Mould was found on bread stored in the pantry, while an expired sauce was also discovered. Officials also spotted large ants in the kitchen.
Taking note of the hygiene and sanitation deficiencies, the Food Department sealed the premises.
Five Non-Vegetarian Shops Sealed
The civic authorities also conducted inspections of non-vegetarian food establishments in Dudheshwar, including shops located opposite Dariyakhan Ghummat and behind the Shahibaug Police Commissioner's office.
The five establishments were identified as belonging to Mohammad Sagir Nur Mohammad Qureshi, Mohammad Sadik Nur Mohammad Qureshi, Abdul Rahim Nur Mohammad Qureshi, Abdul Khalik Nur Mohammad Qureshi and Mohammad Samir Nur Mohammad Qureshi.
According to the Food Department, the shops were operating without the required FSSAI registration or licence and were also found to be non-compliant with hygiene requirements. All five establishments were subsequently sealed.
FSSAI Licence Mandatory For Meat Shops
Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, establishments selling non-vegetarian food are required to obtain the appropriate FSSAI registration or licence.
Such establishments are required to maintain adequate lighting, ventilation and cleanliness and take measures to prevent pest infestation.
The civic authorities have also emphasised that meat must be procured from authorised slaughterhouses or approved suppliers holding the required FSSAI licence, with purchase bills properly maintained. Slaughtering animals inside retail meat shops is prohibited.
