Mega Makeover: Ahmedabad Civic Body Greenlights ₹3,636-Crore Infrastructure Push Ahead Of 2030 Commonwealth Games

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has greenlit an ambitious infrastructure roadmap worth ₹3,636 crore aimed at transforming Gujarat’s commercial capital into a world-class sports and civic hub. With an eye on hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, civic officials have tabled comprehensive project proposals before the Standing Committee, laying the groundwork for a massive overhaul across public works, urban transit, water management, and healthcare.

The comprehensive plan, scheduled for official approval by the Standing Committee and the full municipal board before reaching the state government, focuses heavily on modernising urban mobility and creating state-of-the-art sports facilities.

Modern Sports Hubs And High-Tech Transit On The Cards

To strengthen the city's bid for major international sporting events, AMC has prioritised the development of mini sports complexes in areas such as Gota and Ranip. The proposals also focus on decongesting major traffic corridors through targeted road redesigns, installation of modern noise barriers, and essential structural maintenance on key bridges across the city.

A dedicated allocation of ₹34 crore has been earmarked exclusively for traffic management solutions, complemented by expanding municipal EV charging infrastructure and improving public transport networks.

Overhaul Of Water Pipelines, Lakes, And Civic Infrastructure

A massive portion of the capital expenditure—over ₹752 crore—is dedicated to upgrading water supply systems, laying new stormwater drains, and interlinking urban lakes. Development works will also cover Chandola Lake, along with construction and refurbishing projects for:

• Community & Health Spaces: New urban health centres, laboratories, and dedicated physiotherapy centres in Ranip and Vejalpur.
• Civic Amenities: Upgrades to city civic centres, fire stations, community halls, party plots, and public crematoriums.
• Commercial Hubs: Setting up mini shopping arcades on the lines of Ahmedabad Haat and organised vegetable markets.

Hospital infrastructure managed by the civic body will receive a shot in the arm with ₹161 crore allocated for advanced medical equipment and furniture, notably across LG Hospital and Shardaben Hospital. Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board has proposed ₹113 crore for educational upgrades, including a new school building in Makarba.

₹472-Crore Road Redesign Plan Covers 117 Key Routes

Under the Chief Minister’s Swarnim Jayanti Mukhya Mantri Urban Development Scheme, the Gujarat state government initially asked the civic body for infrastructure proposals worth ₹315 crore. Reassessing the city's expanding needs, AMC submitted a larger project blueprint worth ₹472 crore to revamp 117 primary roads across various municipal zones.

Major road projects planned under the ₹472-crore allocation include:

• White-Topping Projects: Durable concrete white-topping on key stretches including Naranpura, Thaltej, Chandkheda, Lambha ward, and the Shivranjani-to-Iscon corridor.
• Arterial Resurfacing: Complete asphalt milling and resurfacing along Khadia, Relief Road, Bopal (Empire to Sanvi Nirman), and the LJ College to Chiripal House stretch.
• High-Density Corridors: Surface improvements along SoBo Center Road up to the SP Ring Road, roads near Cambay Hotel in Vejalpur, and designated routes used for the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra procession.

With the civic body moving swiftly to secure approvals, these projects are expected to roll out in phases once funding sanctions arrive from Gandhinagar.
