Love Marriage Dispute Turns Violent in Ahmedabad: Man Damages Brother-in-Law’s Electric Meter With Sword

A family dispute over a love marriage turned violent in Ahmedabad’s Gomtipur after a man allegedly attacked his brother-in-law’s house with a sword and damaged the electric meter.

Sword-Wielding Man Attacks House

The incident took place on Monday night when Siraj alias Ravan Sarfaraz Ansari allegedly arrived at his brother-in-law’s house carrying an unsheathed sword.

According to the complaint filed by Mohamad Ahad Ansari, the accused hurled abuses and became aggressive after family members shut the doors and windows out of fear. He allegedly struck the house wall and electric meter with the sword, damaging them, before fleeing after the family alerted the police control room.

Gomtipur police have registered a case against Siraj and started legal proceedings.

Dispute Over Wife Being Called to Maternal Home

The complaint states that Ahad’s younger brother, 31-year-old tailor Mohamad Sajjid, had married Siraj’s sister in a love marriage around a year ago. The couple subsequently moved into a separate rented house in Gomtipur.

Two days before the attack, an argument reportedly broke out between the couple after Sajjid’s wife was frequently being called back to her maternal home by her mother.

Police said the dispute appears to have led to tension between Sajjid and Siraj, with the latter allegedly holding a grudge over the matter.

Families Had Reportedly Normalised Relations

Family members said relations between the two families had initially settled after the love marriage, with the couple living independently.

Tensions resurfaced over interference in the couple’s domestic affairs, however. The disagreement eventually escalated into an attack on the house with a sword.

The Gomtipur police are investigating the incident and the circumstances surrounding the dispute.
