A 27-year-old labourer from West Bengal died after an adjoining wall collapsed on him during soil-filling work at the LG Hospital compound in Ahmedabad’s Maninagar area.
Labourer Crushed Under Collapsed Wall
The incident occurred around 9 am on Tuesday near a new building under construction within the LG Hospital compound. The labourer sustained severe injuries after the wall suddenly collapsed on him amid soil-filling work.
The injured worker was rushed to the LG Hospital ICU by a colleague for emergency treatment. Doctors later declared him dead at 11.05 am.
Victim Was Living at Hospital Compound
The deceased was identified as Chhutan Shukrumar Mandal, 27, a native of Yadpur in West Bengal’s Malda district. He had been living within the LG Hospital compound and was working as a labourer.
According to the preliminary details, Mandal was carrying out masonry-related work at the old LG Hospital compound when the adjacent wall collapsed. A buildup of pressure from accumulated soil is suspected to have contributed to the collapse.
Mandal was trapped beneath the wall and suffered severe blunt-force injuries. A co-worker identified as Krishna immediately took him to the ICU at around 9.20 am.
Maninagar Police Begin Probe
Following information from the hospital police outpost, ASI Rajeshbhai of the Maninagar Police Station reached the site and began an investigation.
Police recorded a detailed statement from the deceased’s wife, Jumaben Vagchi, 33, and conducted an inquest panchnama. Arrangements were also made for a post-mortem examination.
A case of accidental death has been registered. Police said further action would be taken if the investigation establishes negligence by the contractor or any other person involved in the construction work.
