RFID tags have been installed at designated points along the tracks, while Kavach equipment and communication towers have been installed on locomotives and at stations. The system provides loco pilots with real-time information on signal status and train speed through a display inside the locomotive cabin.
If a train passes a red signal inadvertently or exceeds the prescribed speed limit, Kavach can automatically apply the brakes to bring the train to a halt.
The system is also designed to prevent collisions if two trains are detected travelling towards each other on the same track due to technical or human error.
Safety Benefits Across Two Major Routes
The installation is expected to strengthen safety on routes connecting Ahmedabad with North Gujarat and Rajasthan as well as the Kutch-Saurashtra region.
Kavach can also assist loco pilots during poor visibility caused by fog or heavy rain by displaying signal information inside the cabin. The system can intervene when trains exceed prescribed speed limits at curves, bridges and other restricted sections.
An automatic whistling feature will also activate the train horn when approaching designated level crossings.
With the completion of the 404-km installation, the Ahmedabad Division is set to formally commission the safety system on September 27.
