A suspected rickshaw gang stole ₹ 50,000 from a labour contractor travelling from Kankaria Railway Yard to Khokhra late at night, prompting a police investigation.
Rahulbhai Katara, who works as a labour contractor for a private company in Chhatral, had arrived at Kankaria Railway Yard with his colleague Nareshbhai around 11.15 pm on September 30. The two were waiting for a rickshaw to reach Khokhra.
A rickshaw soon stopped near them. An individual was already seated in the rear, while the driver asked Rahulbhai and Nareshbhai to sit on either side of the driver's seat.
Shortly after the rickshaw started moving, the driver claimed he was having difficulty driving and stopped the vehicle. He asked both passengers to get down before speeding away towards Anupam Bridge.
After getting off, Rahulbhai checked his pockets and realised that ₹ 50,000 in cash was missing.
He suspected that the driver and the passenger already seated in the rickshaw had worked together to distract him and steal the money. His wife, Sonalben Katara, later approached Kagdapith Police Station and lodged a complaint.
Police have registered a case and launched a search for the driver and the suspected accomplice.
Gang Targets Passengers Near Railway Yards
The incident has brought attention to a suspected gang operating through a similar rickshaw-based modus operandi.
The gang allegedly targets passengers travelling alone or in small numbers from railway stations, bus stops and railway yards, particularly at night.
An accomplice first sits in the rear of the rickshaw while the victim is made to sit towards the front. During the journey, the driver allegedly creates a situation that distracts the passenger.
The accomplice then takes advantage of the distraction to remove cash or valuables from the victim's trouser or shirt pocket.
After the theft, the driver reportedly asks the passenger to get down on the pretext of being unable to continue driving or facing some other problem. The rickshaw then leaves the spot, making it difficult for the victim to immediately identify or trace the suspects.
Police are now examining the circumstances of the Kankaria Yard incident and searching for the accused.
