IMD Issues Red Alert in Ahmedabad and 7 Other States on July 31 ; Warns Thunderstorms, Lightning

Ahmedabad is likely to remain under the grip of active monsoon conditions, with the latest seven-day forecast warning of continued rain and thundershowers across the city and much of Gujarat. 

Red Alert in 8 Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast indicates that Gujarat is likely to experience widespread rain and thundershowers over the next seven days. 

It has issued a red alert in Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, and Dang. The forecast has also highlighted the potential impact of severe waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas, traffic disruption and possible flash floods in vulnerable locations. 

Heavy Rainfall Warning:

• July 30: Light to moderate rain is likely at isolated places in North Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, while South Gujarat may receive rain at a few places. Isolated showers are also expected across Saurashtra-Kutch.
• July 31: Rain is likely at a few places in Ahmedabad and other North Gujarat districts, while many places in South Gujarat may receive showers.
• August 1: Rain activity is expected to intensify, with most places across North Gujarat, South Gujarat and Saurashtra likely to receive light to moderate rain. Many parts of Kutch may also see showers.
• August 2: Widespread rainfall is likely to continue across Ahmedabad, North Gujarat, South Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch.
• August 3: Rain is expected at many places across North Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch, with showers at a few places in South Gujarat.
• August 4: Rain activity may ease slightly, with light to moderate showers likely at a few places across Gujarat and isolated rainfall in Saurashtra-Kutch.
• August 5: Similar conditions are expected, with light to moderate rain likely at a few places across North and South Gujarat and isolated showers over Saurashtra-Kutch.

The forecast is valid until 8.30 am on August 5, 2026. 

Thunderstorms, Lightning Add To Risk

The advisory also warns of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty or squally winds. Such weather could lead to falling trees and branches, damage to power and communication lines and partial damage to vulnerable structures.

People have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid unnecessary travel and not take shelter under trees. Residents should also stay away from water bodies and objects that conduct electricity during lightning activity.
