Gujarat Vidyapith, located on Ashram Road in Ahmedabad, has once again found itself embroiled in controversy. Days after students were reportedly forced to eat in waterlogged mess premises, an inspection conducted by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) allegedly uncovered expired food items and non-food substances at the mess serving students staying in the boys’ and girls’ hostels.
The inspection led to a commotion, with police arriving at the campus following the incident.
ABVP Flags Expired Items and Hygiene Concerns
The university has a common kitchen where meals for male and female students are prepared, while separate dining arrangements are in place. ABVP members inspected the kitchen and mess late on Wednesday night.
The student organisation alleged that several items had crossed their expiry dates and that non-food substances were found in the kitchen. ABVP also released photographs allegedly showing rotten onions and tomatoes, while raising concerns over unhygienic conditions in the mess.
The university administration, however, stated that the mess is managed by students themselves. It also said that female students were frightened when the inspection was conducted at night, prompting the authorities to call the police. A municipal corporation team subsequently inspected the premises and reportedly found the arrangements satisfactory.
Hygiene Complaints Surface at LD Engineering College Mess
Meanwhile, a video alleging unhygienic conditions at the mess of Ahmedabad’s LD Engineering College has also gone viral. The video reportedly shows dirty food preparation areas and unclean walls inside the mess.
The state health department has launched inspections of hostels and canteens across Gujarat. Separately, ABVP has begun checking facilities and food quality at hostels and canteens as part of its campaign.
