A joint team of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, Ahmedabad Rural Special Operations Group (SOG) and Delhi Police has arrested an alleged operative of the Goldy Brar gang from Vejalpur in a late-night operation, police said on Thursday.
The accused has been identified as Aarif, alias ‘Pistol’, who was wanted in connection with more than 11 criminal cases, including allegations of attempt to murder, firing and extortion, according to police.
Accused Allegedly Changed Residences To Evade Police
The arrest followed a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving the three agencies, which had been tracking the accused across multiple jurisdictions.
Police said Aarif had repeatedly changed his places of residence and allegedly concealed his identity to evade investigators.
According to the Crime Branch, preliminary investigation indicated that Aarif allegedly acted as an operational link for the syndicate and was involved in facilitating threat calls and extortion activities allegedly carried out in the name of Brar.
Threat Calls Allegedly Routed Through Dubai
Police further alleged that some of the threat calls were routed through Dubai.
The investigation is now focused on establishing the accused’s alleged role in the extortion network, identifying his local associates and tracing the financial channels through which the alleged proceeds were handled.
The arrest comes amid increased scrutiny of alleged interstate organised-crime networks operating through associates and intermediaries in Gujarat.
In July, an Ahmedabad-based businessman had approached police after allegedly receiving a ₹5-crore extortion threat from a person claiming to be Goldy Brar. Investigators were examining whether the threat was directly linked to Brar or whether his name had been used by others.
Joint Interrogation Underway
Police said joint interrogation of Aarif is underway to establish his links with other suspects and ascertain the extent of the alleged network’s activities.
The Crime Branch said further investigation would focus on the accused’s criminal history, local contacts, communication channels and alleged financial network.
