Father Alleges Year-Long Harassment Pushed Son to Suicide; 3 Relatives Along With Wife Booked in Ahmedabad

More than six months after a 45-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after consuming poison, the Krishnanagar police have registered an FIR against his wife and three of her relatives on charges of abetment to suicide and offences under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The case was filed following a complaint by the deceased’s 72-year-old father, who alleged that sustained harassment, repeated threats and caste-based abuse drove his son to take the extreme step.

Complaint filed over six months after death

According to the FIR, Ravjibhai Gohil, a retired resident of New Naroda, approached the police seeking legal action after the death of his son, Naresh, who allegedly consumed poison on January 14, 2026, and died during treatment at Civil Hospital in the early hours of January 15. The complaint was registered on July 27.

Police said Naresh had been married to Kalpanaben for nearly 23 years, and the couple had two children. While they had initially lived in a joint family, they had been staying separately for the past four years. The complainant alleged that marital disputes intensified over the last year, eventually leading Naresh to return to his parental home after his wife and children allegedly left him.

Harassment, threats and caste abuse alleged

The FIR names Naresh’s wife, her brother Amitbhai Valjibhai Parmar, another relative Ankitbhai Amitbhai Parmar, and his son-in-law Hitensinh Rajsinh Parmar as accused.

According to the complainant, disagreements over financial matters and family issues escalated into repeated harassment, with the accused allegedly abusing, assaulting and threatening Naresh on multiple occasions. He further alleged that Naresh had approached different police stations in the past regarding the alleged harassment.

The complaint also claims the accused threatened Naresh over the phone, demanded money and repeatedly used caste-based slurs against him and his family. The father alleged that the continuous intimidation and humiliation left his son under severe mental distress.

Poison consumption during Uttarayan

As per the complaint, Naresh left home around noon on January 14 during the Uttarayan festival and returned later in the evening, informing family members that he had consumed poison. He was immediately taken to Civil Hospital, where he succumbed during treatment at around 3.40 am on January 15.

Following the incident, Krishnanagar police had registered an accidental death case and initiated the standard inquest proceedings.

FIR registered, ACP to lead probe

In his complaint, Ravjibhai alleged that the sustained mental and physical harassment, repeated death threats and caste-based abuse over the preceding year forced his son to end his life. He sought legal action against all four accused.

Based on the complaint, Krishnanagar police have now registered an FIR under relevant provisions, including abetment to suicide and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police said the allegations are being verified, and an Assistant Commissioner of Police has been assigned to investigate the case. Further action will depend on the evidence gathered during the probe.
