A 69-year-old woman returning home after attending her sister-in-law’s funeral in Maharashtra was allegedly robbed of valuables worth around ₹2.18 lakh by four unidentified men in an autorickshaw in Ahmedabad.

The incident took place on August 7 after the woman arrived at Kalupur Railway Station from Kalyan in Maharashtra. Kalupur Police registered a complaint on August 9.

Woman allegedly targeted after boarding autorickshaw

According to the complaint, Ilaben Shah arrived at Kalupur Railway Station around 7:30 a.m. after travelling by the Pune–Veraval Express. She was carrying two bags containing ₹8,000 in cash and a gold mangalsutra weighing around one-and-a-half tola, valued at approximately ₹2.1 lakh.

At around 7:45 a.m., Shah allegedly hired a shuttle autorickshaw near the station entrance to travel to Memnagar. The driver, reportedly aged between 20 and 25, agreed to take her for ₹200.

Two men were already seated inside the vehicle. A third man allegedly joined them shortly after the autorickshaw started moving.

Route allegedly changed towards Memco

Instead of heading towards Memnagar, the driver allegedly took the autorickshaw towards Kalupur Bridge.

When Shah questioned him about the route, the men allegedly told her that roadwork had blocked the usual route and that they would have to take another way.

The autorickshaw was subsequently allegedly diverted towards Memco.

When Shah became suspicious and asked the driver to stop, the four men allegedly threatened her and told her to remain silent.

The accused then allegedly snatched the purse hanging from her shoulder and took the cash and gold mangalsutra.

Woman allegedly pushed out of vehicle

According to the complaint, the autorickshaw continued towards Memco before stopping near a crossroads at around 8:30 a.m.

The four men allegedly pushed Shah out of the autorickshaw and fled with the stolen valuables.

Shah later returned home and informed her family about the incident. She subsequently approached Kalupur Police Station with her husband and lodged a complaint against the unidentified accused.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from Kalupur Railway Station, Kalupur Bridge and the route towards Memco is being examined to identify the accused and trace the autorickshaw.
