Dengue Outbreak Sweeps Ahmedabad: AMC Penalises CEPT University, 221 Others Over Mosquito Breeding

Following a sharp uptick in dengue cases across the city after recent rainfall, the Vector Borne Disease Control branch of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) health department has launched a massive crackdown on mosquito breeding sites.

Inspecting 1,298 locations across various zones on 22 and 23 September, civic authorities detected larvae at 146 premises, issued notices to 222 units for negligence, and collected ₹6.06 lakh in administrative fines.

The city is grappling with a sudden surge in vector-borne illnesses, with dengue cases rising rapidly over the past month. AMC teams carried out intensive drives across construction sites, government premises, commercial complexes, and educational institutes to curb breeding points.

Prominent Educational Institutes and Construction Projects Penalised

The AMC hit several high-profile sites and institutions with notices and financial penalties after uncovering widespread mosquito larvae during checks.

Prominent locations penalised by the civic body include:

• CEPT University (Navrangpura)
• L.M. College of Pharmacy (Navrangpura)
• Gandhi Ashram Entrance Gate Construction & Redevelopment Project (Stadium ward)
• Adani Site / Ramesh Real Infra (India Colony)
• Kago Motors Private Limited (Gota)
• Aristo Avira Site (Chandlodia)
• Sun Avenue Complex (Navrangpura)

The inspections revealed breeding grounds in rain-fed debris left on terraces, plant pots, overhead and underground tanks, scrap material, discarded compound buckets, old tyres, and unsealed water containers.

West Zone Leads in Fines and Violations

Civic inspectors targeted multiple zones across the city, with the West Zone recording the highest number of violations and administrative fines.

• West Zone: Inspections across 232 units uncovered breeding at 55 locations. AMC issued notices to 93 units and collected ₹1.85 lakh in fines.
• North Zone: Checked 231 units, detecting breeding at 22 premises.
• North West Zone: Scrutinised 122 units, finding larvae at 13 sites.
• Other Zones: Teams found active breeding at 13 premises in the East Zone, 20 in the Central Zone, 15 in the South Zone, and 8 in the South West Zone.

Dengue Cases Surge Past August Totals in 20 Days

Health department data highlights a worrying climb in vector-borne infections during September 2026. While August recorded 361 dengue cases, the first 20 days of September alone witnessed 496 cases—exceeding August's total by 135 cases before the month has even drawn to a close.

Between January and 20 September 2026, Ahmedabad recorded a cumulative total of 1,084 dengue cases. Over the same period, civic health records registered 386 cases of malaria, 14 cases of chikungunya, and 69 cases of filaria.

In light of the outbreak, the AMC health department has urged residents and commercial entities to empty and dry out all water-storing containers at least once a week or dispose of them completely. Civic authorities advised citizens to seek help from authorized agencies for fogging, larvicide spraying, and checks, or contact AMC health officials for guidance and awareness programmes.
