AUDA Plants 75,000 Saplings Across Ahmedabad Region Ahead Of Commonwealth Games

The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has launched a large-scale plantation drive, planting more than 75,000 saplings across key areas of the Ahmedabad metropolitan region as the city prepares for the Commonwealth Games and a greater international spotlight.

The initiative is aimed at expanding Ahmedabad’s green cover while strengthening environmental infrastructure across rapidly developing Town Planning (TP) scheme areas.

Over 50,000 Saplings Planted Across TP Schemes

AUDA has planted more than 50,000 saplings across various TP schemes, with major plantation activity concentrated around the developing corridors of Godhavi-Manipur, Aslali and Kalol-Ola-Borisana.

The authority said the drive is intended to create a stronger green buffer around expanding urban areas and support Ahmedabad’s broader sustainability goals.

Ahmedabad recently secured the top position among Indian cities with a population of more than 10 lakh in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, adding further focus to efforts to improve the city's environmental profile.

Sanand To Get Medicinal Forest

As part of the initiative, AUDA is also developing a dedicated medicinal forest in Sanand.

The project will feature more than 15,000 medicinal plants and traditional herbs, with the aim of promoting biodiversity while creating a specialised green zone featuring plants used in Ayurvedic practices.

Shela Gets Dedicated Fruit Forests

Another major component of the plantation programme is being developed in Shela, where AUDA is creating dedicated fruit orchards.

Around 11,000 saplings are being planted across separate belts featuring:

  • Mango
  • Chikoo
  • Jamun
  • Amla

The fruit plantations are expected to add biodiversity while creating additional green spaces in one of Ahmedabad’s rapidly urbanising areas.

Focus On Heat, Air Quality And Green Cover

The plantation campaign forms part of AUDA’s wider effort to integrate green infrastructure into the city's expanding metropolitan footprint.

The authority's targeted approach is expected to help mitigate urban heat island effects, improve air quality and strengthen biodiversity across developing areas.

With Ahmedabad preparing to host the Commonwealth Games, the large-scale plantation programme also seeks to project the city as a greener and more environmentally conscious destination.
