Just weeks after the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) spent lakhs of rupees patching up city roads damaged during the peak monsoon, Monday’s heavy downpour exposed the precarious condition of the civic infrastructure once again.

The fresh deluge washed away recent repair work across several key stretches, leaving commuters to navigate treacherous, pitted roads and raising serious questions about the quality of materials used.

During the heavy downpours in July, roads across the city suffered extensive damage, prompting the AMC engineering and road project departments across all seven zones to carry out emergency repairs.

Because complete road resurfacing remains halted due to the ongoing monsoon season, civic officials resorted to temporary measures—employing hot-mix, cold-mix, and jet patcher technology to seal cratered surfaces.

Repairs Wash Away Within Weeks, Igniting Citizen Anger

However, the downpour on 14 September swiftly undid those efforts. Temporary patches peeled off across multiple main thoroughfares and internal sector roads, reopening old craters while creating a fresh batch of hazards for motorists and pedestrians.

The rapid deterioration of recently repaired surfaces has sparked widespread frustration among residents, with many questioning the effectiveness and financial accountability of the civic body's recurring repair drives. Commuters continue to face severe traffic bottlenecks and safety hazards as waterlogging clears to reveal ruined asphalt underneath.

Civic Chief Orders Immediate Repairs Across All Seven Zones

Following the backlash and widespread reports of road damage, the AMC Commissioner directed additional engineers across all zones to begin filling potholes on a priority basis as soon as floodwaters recede.

• Immediate Field Directives: Zone and ward-level teams have resumed filling craters using whatever materials are immediately available on-site.
• Accountability Measures: Field engineers are now mandated to submit photographic proof of completed repairs directly to the Commissioner's office.
• Long-Term Delay: Full-fledged road resurfacing projects remain on hold until the monsoon subsides completely across Gujarat.

Despite these renewed instructions, the quick failure of July's multi-lakh-rupee repair campaign continues to draw criticism from motorists, who demand long-term structural overhauls rather than temporary, seasonal patches.
