Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani has cracked down on civic officials over failing sanitation standards, demanding a mandatory seven-day shutdown of any construction site where mosquito breeding is discovered.

Chairing a high-level review meeting targeting mosquito-borne diseases and urban waste management in Gujarat's commercial hub, Pani expressed strong dissatisfaction with operational delays spanning vector control, road works, and estate management.

Zero Tolerance on Mosquito Breeding

Refusing to treat the rising vector-borne disease threat lightly, the civic chief instructed health and estate teams to adopt strict enforcement protocols similar to those deployed during the pandemic. Construction project managers face immediate suspension of work if standing water or larvae are found on their premises.

Pani extended these disciplinary measures to municipal properties, confirming that staff managing water distribution centres and sewage treatment plants (STPs) will face financial penalties and administrative action if breeding grounds are detected within public facility grounds.

Garbage Management under Direct Scrutiny

The meeting turned tense when Deputy Municipal Commissioner Amritesh Aurangabadkar highlighted that Naranpura had recently won a internal 'cleanest ward' recognition. Pani dismissed the claim, pointing out that other zonal departments were entirely unaware of the achievement and demanding verified field outcomes over paperwork.

Senior officers faced intense questioning over the enforcement of Bulk Waste Generator (BWG) rules. Units producing over 50 kilograms of daily solid waste—including major hotels, commercial complexes, and restaurants—must manage their organic waste independently or face steep fines.

Key operational metrics demanded by the Commissioner before the next progress review include:

• A comprehensive audit of four-category dustbin installations across public locations.
• Complete attendance records for sanitation workers, RWA staff, and 311 helpline teams via biometric tracking.
• Itemised penalty figures collected from non-compliant bulk waste generators.
• Status reports on door-to-door collection routes and clearance of urban bottlenecks.

Infrastructure and Encroachment Delays

Apart from public health risks, the Commissioner pulled up the AMC Estate Department over long-pending Town Planning (TP) road implementations. Unchecked street encroachments and sluggish storm-drain de-silting works came under heavy criticism, with department heads instructed to clear bottlenecks immediately to prevent waterlogging during upcoming monsoon spells.
