Ahmedabad Woman’s ‘Hit-And-Run’ Death Turns Into Murder Case; Father, Brother Arrested

The death of a 22-year-old woman, initially reported as a hit-and-run accident in Ahmedabad’s Sarkhej area, has turned into a murder investigation, with the M Division Traffic Police arresting her father and brother for allegedly killing her and staging the incident as a road accident.

The deceased, identified as Sophia, died at Sola Civil Hospital on August 13, nearly a day after she was allegedly attacked. Police said the accused had reportedly objected to her interactions with other men and later fabricated a story about an unidentified vehicle hitting the family’s motorcycle.

Accident Complaint Filed After Woman Sustained Critical Injuries

According to the initial complaint, the incident occurred around 11 pm on August 12 on the road between Gheljipura crossroads and Kalitha Cut, near Samriddha Dairy in Sarkhej.

The complaint stated that an unidentified vehicle, allegedly being driven rashly, struck the motorcycle carrying Sophia and her family members before fleeing the spot.

Sophia suffered serious injuries to her head and legs and was taken to Sola Civil Hospital. Police said she died at around 2.05 pm on August 13.

The incident was initially investigated as a fatal road accident.

Police Suspect Accident Story Was Staged

During the investigation, officers found inconsistencies in the alleged hit-and-run account and began examining whether the injuries and circumstances surrounding the incident were consistent with a road accident.

Police subsequently arrested Mohmand Habil Mohmand Farooq, 38, and Mohmand Farooq Nawabkhan, 56, who are relatives of Sophia.

Investigators alleged that the accused had been upset over a video involving Sophia and a boy that had surfaced around three months before her death.

According to police, Sophia had been reprimanded by family members over the video and her interactions with other men. Investigators alleged that the accused believed her conduct was bringing disrepute to the family.

Iron Hammer Allegedly Used In Attack

Police alleged that the killing was planned in advance.

According to investigators, one of the accused allegedly took an iron hammer from a godown and concealed it in his clothes. The other allegedly arranged a motorcycle.

Sophia was then allegedly taken towards an isolated stretch of road near Gheljipura village.

Police alleged that she was attacked on the head with the iron hammer, leaving her with severe injuries. She was subsequently taken for medical treatment but died the following afternoon.

Murder Allegedly Passed Off As Hit-And-Run

After the alleged assault, the accused reportedly attempted to create the impression that Sophia and the others had been involved in a road accident.

Police alleged that the accused fabricated a version in which an unidentified vehicle struck their motorcycle and fled.

The complaint was then lodged on the basis of the alleged hit-and-run account. Investigators, however, found inconsistencies while reconstructing the sequence of events and questioning those connected with the case.

The police now allege that the road accident was staged to conceal the killing and mislead investigators.

Father And Brother Arrested

The case has since shifted from a traffic accident investigation to a murder probe.

Police allege that one of the accused carried out the fatal assault while the other assisted in the conspiracy and the subsequent attempt to present the death as a hit-and-run.

The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Police Inspector U.B. Dhakhada of the M Division Traffic Police Station said further investigation and legal proceedings are underway.

The allegations against the two accused are part of the police investigation and will be tested through the judicial process.
