A 40-year-old woman from Shahibaug died by suicide after allegedly facing prolonged harassment from her husband and in-laws over dowry, police said. Shahibaug police have registered a case against her husband and several members of her in-laws' family following a complaint by her father.
The woman, identified in the complaint as Sonalben, also referred to as Parinita, had been married to Paresh Shamalbhai Solanki for around 15 years. The couple has an 11-year-old son.
Husband Allegedly Taunted Her Over Dowry
According to the complaint, the couple's married life was initially stable. However, around 10 years ago, Paresh allegedly suffered heavy losses in his business and went into debt.
The woman's family alleged that following the financial setback, her in-laws began pressuring her to bring money from her parental home.
She was allegedly taunted that she had brought nothing in dowry and was subjected to harassment over minor issues. Her husband allegedly told her that he no longer liked her and threatened to bring another woman into the marriage.
Woman Called Father Before Death
According to the complaint, on the morning of September 6, Sonalben called her father and told him that she was near a canal in Raipur.
She allegedly told him that she was unable to bear the harassment from her in-laws and was going to enter the canal.
Her father and other family members rushed to the location, but by the time they arrived, she had drowned.
With the help of local residents, her body was recovered and sent to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
