A 28-year-old technical engineer from Ahmedabad has accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment, assault and death threats, alleging that she was forced out of her matrimonial home over an alleged demand for ₹40 lakh. Chandkheda Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.

Dowry Demands Allegedly Began Before Marriage

In her complaint, Anjali Yadav alleged that her in-laws began demanding money and gifts after her marriage to Akash Yadav was arranged in April 2024. The couple married on January 21, 2025.

She alleged that her father, Premchand Yadav, was asked to pay ₹1.11 lakh and ₹21,000 towards wedding-related expenses. At the engagement ceremony, her father-in-law allegedly demanded ₹50,000, clothes for family members and brass utensils.

He later allegedly demanded ₹50 lakh, a car and household appliances. During another ceremony, he sought ₹11 lakh in cash, with the balance to be paid later, according to the complaint.

Husband, In-Laws Accused of Harassment and Assault

Anjali alleged that after the wedding, her husband and mother-in-law taunted her over the dowry brought by her family. Her father had also bought her husband a Honda motorcycle and spent a substantial amount on the wedding and household arrangements, she claimed.

Her sisters-in-law and their husbands allegedly harassed her, with one couple demanding another ₹40 lakh and warning that she would not be allowed to live with her husband in Mumbai unless the money was paid.

She also accused her husband of assaulting her and threatening to defame her family. Despite her father allegedly paying an additional ₹4 lakh, the harassment continued, she said.

When her parents were called to the matrimonial home, they were allegedly told to take her away and arrange a divorce if they could not pay the remaining amount.

Woman Alleges Threat to Burn Her Alive

The complaint states that on October 2, 2025, her in-laws humiliated her parents in front of local residents during an attempt at reconciliation.

On December 14, they allegedly visited her parental home with other men, pressured her parents and threatened them over divorce documents.

That night, Anjali alleged, she was assaulted and forced out of her matrimonial home. She claimed she was threatened with being burnt alive if she returned without paying ₹40 lakh.

Anjali is currently living with her parents. Chandkheda Police have registered a case against her husband and in-laws, and further investigation is under way.
