A 28-year-old married woman died during treatment after allegedly consuming acid at her home in Bapunagar, with her father accusing her husband of subjecting her to repeated physical and mental harassment.

The woman, identified as Anku Devi, was rushed to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after consuming acid on September 23. She died during treatment the same afternoon.

Following her funeral in her native Uttar Pradesh, her father travelled to Ahmedabad and lodged a complaint against his son-in-law at Bapunagar Police Station. Police have registered a case of alleged abetment to suicide and launched an investigation.

Woman Married In 2023, Had Two Children

According to the complaint, Anku Devi was the daughter of Tarbabu Dohare of Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh. She married Saurabh Rajeshbhai Dohare, who was from the same region and worked as a painter in Bapunagar, in 2023.

The couple had two children.

Her father alleged that Saurabh frequently consumed alcohol and would verbally abuse and physically assault Anku Devi. He also allegedly taunted her by telling her, “I don't like you; go die.”

The complaint states that Anku Devi had left for her parental home three times because of the alleged harassment. She later returned to her matrimonial home following social reconciliation efforts.

Woman Consumed Acid While Husband Was Asleep

On September 23, at around 7 am, Anku Devi allegedly consumed acid at her home in Navi Fakirdas ni Chali near Bhidbhanjan Road in Bapunagar.

At the time, her husband was reportedly asleep.

She was taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital in a critical condition. Doctors subsequently declared her dead at around 3.30 pm.

Her body was later taken to her native place in Uttar Pradesh for the last rites.

Mother Received Distressed Call Days Before Death

The complaint also refers to a phone call Anku Devi allegedly made to her mother, Ushadevi, around five to seven days before her death.

According to the family, Anku Devi called her mother from an unknown number and, while crying, allegedly said that Saurabh had severely beaten her after consuming alcohol and was continuing to harass her.

She reportedly pleaded with her mother to take her back to her parental home.

Her mother allegedly tried to console her and told her that she would come to take her home within a few days. Anku Devi, however, consumed acid before her mother could reach Ahmedabad.

Police Begin Investigation

After completing the last rites, Anku Devi's father returned to Ahmedabad and approached Bapunagar Police Station.

Based on his complaint, police have registered a case against Saurabh Dohare under the relevant provisions concerning alleged abetment to suicide and are investigating the circumstances surrounding Anku Devi's death.

Police are also examining the allegations of physical and mental harassment made by the woman's family.
