Ahmedabad Waterlogged After Just 2 Inches of Rain: Submerged Roads, Uprooted Trees & Failed Drainage Claims

It took barely two inches of rainfall to expose the fragility of Ahmedabad’s urban infrastructure. Between 4 pm yesterday and 10 am today, the city recorded an average rainfall of 2.09 inches, yet the impact was disproportionate: widespread waterlogging across 50 localities, severe road damage at 22 locations, and 13 incidents of uprooted trees and fallen branches.

The monsoon spell pushes the city’s cumulative seasonal rainfall to 23.23 inches, but for residents navigating submerged thoroughfares, the municipal administration’s readiness remains the primary concern.

NW and SW Zones Bear the Brunt Again

Despite similar disruptions during the heavy downpour on July 23, civic authorities appear to have drawn few lessons. The North West and South West zones once again emerged as the worst affected, accounting for more than half of all waterlogging grievances registered with the civic control room.

Of the 50 flooded areas reported across the city, the North West zone logged 16 complaints, while the South West zone followed closely with 15. Municipal workers have reportedly cleared water from 47 locations, though pumping operations continue in three persistent spots.

Commuters Face Potholes and Cave-ins

The sudden shower also wreaked havoc on the city’s road surface quality. Civic agencies received 22 formal complaints regarding surface damage, cave-ins, and deep potholes.

Officials stated that repair crews have cleared 18 locations, with patch-up work ongoing at the remaining four sites. However, the recurring nature of these asphalt failures immediately after brief spells of rain raises questions about the quality of materials used in recent road resurfacing drives.

High Winds Uproot Foliage Across City

Accompanying gusty winds triggered vegetation damage across multiple zones, felling six whole trees and snapping large branches at seven other locations.

The South West zone reported the highest number of tree falls (4), followed by the South and Central zones (3 each), the North zone (2), and the East zone (1). Emergency response teams from the parks and gardens department have since cleared all 13 obstruction sites to restore traffic flow.

Unless the Municipal Corporation moves beyond reactive patching and addresses structural drainage bottlenecks, residents in vulnerable pockets face the prospect of repeated disruptions with every passing shower.
