Forty-seven laptops worth around ₹15 lakh were allegedly stolen from a chip-design company’s office in Ahmedabad’s Vastrapur area during a Navratri Garba event on October 13, police said.
The unidentified suspect allegedly entered the office through an unlocked door at around 9.25 pm and switched off the CCTV cameras before stealing the laptops. The theft came to light the following afternoon when an employee returned to collect his clothes and noticed the missing devices.
Office Staff Attended Navratri Garba Event
According to the complaint filed by Nikul Naimesh Shah, 35, a director of Indiesemic Pvt Ltd, the company operates from the second floor of The First Building, near the ITC Narmada hotel.
Shah said he and his wife, Jinal, had been running the chip-design business for around four years. The office has approximately 55 employees, who had left the premises on the evening of October 13 to attend a Navratri Garba event organised by the company at a party plot.
The office door was reportedly left unlocked when the staff departed. The building’s security guard held the office keys, which housekeeping staff routinely collected to open and clean the premises before returning them.
CCTV Footage Shows Suspect Entering Office
Shah learnt about the theft on October 14 after employee Sachin Sharma called him to report that laptops were missing from the workstations. Sharma had reportedly returned to the office around 12.30 pm to collect his clothes after attending the Garba event.
Shah then contacted the housekeeping employee, who reportedly said he had locked the office at around 10 pm on October 13 and returned the key to the security guard.
When Shah checked the CCTV footage, he allegedly found that an unidentified person had entered through the open door at around 9.25 pm and switched off the cameras. The theft is suspected to have occurred before the housekeeping employee arrived to lock the office.
Company Reports ₹15 Lakh Loss
The stolen devices included laptops manufactured by Dell, Lenovo, HP and Asus, along with other equipment. The complainant estimated the total value of the missing laptops at approximately ₹15 lakh.
Shah subsequently approached Vastrapur police station with the company’s accounts manager, Ravi Uttamchandani, and lodged a complaint against the unidentified suspect.
Police are investigating the theft and examining the available evidence to identify the accused.
