Ahmedabad Man Loses Nearly ₹2 Lakh in UPI Transaction Scam

A grocery shopkeeper from Ahmedabad’s Hansol lost nearly ₹2 lakh after an unidentified person allegedly carried out three unauthorised UPI transactions from his Indian Overseas Bank account.

The victim, Kiritbhai Ramanlal Patel, 72, approached the Airport police after discovering that ₹1,99,997 had been deducted from his account without his knowledge or consent.

Patel runs R K Kirana Store at Patel Vas in Hansol and lives with his family in the area. According to his complaint, he does not use any online payment application and has not made any of the transactions recorded in his bank account.

Bank SMS Alert Reveals Unauthorised Transactions

The incident came to light on October 6 when Patel was at his shop. He checked his bank account after receiving an SMS alert from the bank informing him that money had been deducted.

On checking the account, Patel found three separate transactions. The first two transactions were for ₹49,999 each, while the third transaction involved ₹99,999.

The three transactions together amounted to ₹1,99,997.

Patel then contacted the bank to find out how the money had been transferred. He was informed that the transactions had been carried out through UPI IDs linked to different individuals.

According to the bank records mentioned in the complaint, the accounts receiving the money were identified as belonging to MD Obaid Raza, MD Arib Ansari and Rahul Kumar.

Patel Says He Does Not Use Online Payment Apps

Patel told police that he does not use any online payment application and had not carried out the three transactions himself.

He suspected that someone may have gained access to his mobile phone or banking details and used them to transfer money from his account.

After discovering the unauthorised deductions, Patel contacted the national cyber fraud helpline in 1930 and reported the suspected financial fraud.

Airport Police Begin Investigation

Patel subsequently approached the Airport police and lodged a formal complaint seeking action against the unidentified accused.

Police are investigating how the transactions were carried out and how the accused allegedly gained access to Patel’s banking or UPI credentials.

The police are also attempting to trace the accounts into which the money was transferred and establish the identity of the person behind the transactions.
