A Facebook link to a chat application allegedly led to a ₹98,568 loss for a 34-year-old tailor in Ahmedabad after he downloaded an app called ‘Jiya App’ and his phone began malfunctioning. He discovered the unauthorised transaction a week later while checking his bank statement, prompting Narol Police to register a case.

Suspicious App Link Followed by Phone Malfunction

Dikshit Budhaji Thakor, who lives in Gyaspur’s Mukhivala Vas in Narol, works at Avadat Apparels in Lambha. According to his complaint, he was watching Facebook Reels at home around 6 pm on October 5 when a link promoting the ‘Jiya App’ appeared.

He followed the link, downloaded the application through Google Chrome and updated it. His phone then started hanging. Thakor uninstalled the app and restarted the device, which began working normally again.

With no debit alert received, he was unaware of the alleged fraud.

₹98,568 Sent to SBI Account

The fraud came to light on October 12 when Thakor opened his Axis Bank account to check his balance before making a payment. He found that ₹98,568 had been transferred through UPI on October 5 without his knowledge.

The transaction records reportedly showed the money going to a State Bank of India account held in the name of Satish Yadav.

Thakor subsequently reported the incident through the cybercrime helpline, 1930. Narol Police have registered a case against an unidentified accused and are investigating the transaction and the suspected link between the app download and the loss.
