Ahmedabad SOG Seizes Tanker Carrying 27,630 Litres of Acidic Chemical Without Pollution Clearance

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch’s Special Operations Group (SOG) has arrested a 29-year-old tanker driver and seized a tanker allegedly carrying 27,630 litres of an acidic chemical without the required permission from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) in the Naroda GIDC area.

According to an SOG official, the action was taken on September 9 based on specific information received by the police.

Driver Intercepted in Naroda

The accused has been identified as Kalyansinh Kalusinh Rajput, 29, a resident of Nandasan in Kadi and originally from Rohida village in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district.

Police said Rajput was intercepted while driving a Tata tanker near Kayakalp Complex in Naroda.

The tanker was allegedly carrying 27,630 litres of chemical liquid containing acidic substances without the necessary authorisation from the GPCB.

Chemical Could Pose Environmental Risk

According to the SOG, the chemical had a distinctive odour and could pose a threat to public health and the aquatic environment if illegally discharged into a river, drain, lake or other water body.

During the operation, police seized the tanker, the chemical liquid and other articles. The total value of the seized property has been estimated at ₹10.50 lakh.

Case Registered Under Environmental Laws

A case has been registered at the DCB Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016.

Police said the case involves allegations of negligent conduct involving hazardous substances and violations of environmental regulations governing the handling and transportation of hazardous waste.
