Ahmedabad’s Makarba Overbridge, Vadaj Flyover to be Inaugurated Tomorrow; 3 Lakh Commuters to Get Traffic Relief

Two delayed Ahmedabad bridge projects the Makarba Railway Overbridge and Vadaj Flyover are set for inauguration on Thursday, September 24, with the openings expected to ease traffic for around 3 lakh commuters.

The Makarba Railway Overbridge, built at a cost of ₹98.60 crore, is expected to benefit around 1.5 lakh commuters. The ₹127.92-crore Vadaj Flyover is expected to provide similar relief to another 1.5 lakh commuters.

Both projects missed their original completion deadlines, extending traffic disruptions in the surrounding areas.

Makarba Railway Overbridge Delayed By 1.5 Years

Construction of the Makarba Railway Overbridge began on September 30, 2023, with completion originally scheduled for March 2025.

The project was delayed after a drainage line ruptured during construction. Officials also found more underground utility lines than those shown on the maps provided to the bridge department, forcing changes to the pillar design.

Delays related to railway work further affected the construction schedule. The overbridge was eventually completed around one and a half years later than planned.

With its opening, commuters travelling through Makarba and adjoining areas are expected to see smoother movement and fewer traffic bottlenecks.

Vadaj Flyover Missed Deadline By Six Months

Work on the Vadaj Flyover began in June 2023 and was scheduled to finish in April 2026.

The project was completed around six months late, with a civic official attributing the delay partly to contractor-related issues. Construction also had to be carried out while heavy traffic continued to use the route.

The ₹127.92-crore flyover is expected to benefit around 1.5 lakh commuters once it opens.

Six Projects To Be Inaugurated

Along with the two bridges, the Chief Minister will inaugurate several other civic projects.

The Fire Department will receive 15 first-response vehicles and 10 boats. The civic body will also inaugurate 329 Economically Weaker Section housing units in Thaltej.

A slum rehabilitation project at Pakhaji no Kuvo in Shahibaug, comprising 108 housing units and 46 shops, will also be inaugurated.

The six projects together involve expenditure of ₹279.80 crore.

Six More Projects To Get Groundbreaking Ceremonies

Groundbreaking ceremonies will also be held for six additional projects across Ahmedabad.

The works include construction of a road in the Ramapir Tekra area of Stadium Ward and an 1,800-mm-diameter drainage line from Nagarvel Hanuman Temple to Guruji Bridge.

A drainage pumping station will be developed at Navana, while bus charging stations are planned at Kathwada and Tragad.

Another project involves developing a tourism circuit connecting Saptarshi Ashram and Jagannath Temple with Atal Ghat.
