Ahmedabad Schools May Hold Voluntary Sunday Classes After Rain Holidays to Recover Lost Academic Time

Schools in Ahmedabad have been permitted to organise voluntary Sunday classes this month to recover academic time lost due to rain-related holidays. The District Education Officer (DEO), Ahmedabad City (East) and Ahmedabad City (West), has issued guidelines allowing schools to conduct additional academic sessions while leaving the final decision with individual school managements.

DEO Issues Advisory After Rain Disruptions

The DEO office has asked all government, granted, non-granted and board-affiliated pre-primary, primary, secondary and higher secondary schools in Ahmedabad city to consider holding Sunday classes on a voluntary basis.

The move comes after several school closures during periods of heavy rainfall disrupted the regular academic schedule and resulted in a loss of classroom hours.

Schools may use these additional sessions for completing pending portions of the syllabus, revision, doubt-solving, assessments and other academic activities to help students catch up.

Sunday Classes Not Compulsory for Schools

The DEO has clarified that Sunday classes will not be mandatory. Schools and principals have been given the freedom to decide whether such sessions are required based on their local situation.

Before conducting any extra classes, schools have been directed to:

• Inform students and parents in advance.
• Prepare schedules according to teacher availability and student convenience.
• Ensure student safety while considering weather conditions.

Schools to Take Decision Based on Local Conditions

The circular states that the guideline is only aimed at compensating for academic losses caused by rain-related closures and does not impose any compulsory Sunday working schedule.

School administrations will assess their academic requirements and decide whether additional classes are needed.

The advisory has been circulated among education inspectors and assistant education inspectors for implementation and information across Ahmedabad city schools.
