A 66-year-old retired man in Ahmedabad’s Danilimda area allegedly lost ₹3.38 lakh after cyber fraudsters posing as ICICI Bank employees sent him malicious APK files on WhatsApp under the pretext of issuing a senior citizen credit card.
Facebook Advertisement Leads to Fraud
According to the complaint filed by Naveed Zahidbeg Saudbhai Chugtale, a resident of Zara Residency in Danilimda, he came across an advertisement for a senior citizen credit card on Facebook around a month ago. He later visited an ICICI Bank branch near Apsara Cinema in Kankaria to enquire about the offer and was told that he would receive a call.
On October 14, around 7 pm, an unidentified caller contacted him, claimed to represent ICICI Bank and said the application form would be sent through WhatsApp.
The complainant subsequently received two APK files from another number, named ‘ICICI Pension Card Download Form.apk’ and ‘Customer support.2.apk’.
Malicious Files Allegedly Enabled Unauthorised Transactions
After he opened the files, his mobile phone reportedly froze and began updating automatically. Around the same time, he started receiving messages about money being debited from his bank account.
He switched off his mobile internet connection in an attempt to stop further transactions. However, the fraudsters had allegedly withdrawn ₹2.35 lakh from his savings account linked to the bank’s Chinchwad branch in Pune.
Two additional transactions totalling ₹1.03 lakh were allegedly made using his Visa Platinum credit card, taking the total loss to ₹3.38 lakh.
Danilimda Police Register Case
Following the incident, Chugtale reported the fraud through the cybercrime helpline 1930. Danilimda police subsequently registered a case and launched an investigation into the alleged fraud.
