Ahmedabad Police Constable Booked After Wife Alleges Alcohol-Fuelled Abuse, Harassment by In-Laws

A police constable posted at Ghatlodia police station in Ahmedabad has been booked after his wife accused him and his family members of physical and mental harassment linked to his drinking habit.

The 37-year-old woman lodged a complaint at Amraiwadi police station against her husband, Alpeshbhai Motibhai Desai, his parents and his younger brother. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the allegations.

Harassment Allegedly Began Three Years After Marriage

According to the complaint, the woman married Desai, a resident of Suryoday Apartments in Ghatlodia, in 2013. The couple has two children.

Around three years into the marriage, Desai allegedly began returning home drunk and picking arguments with his wife over trivial matters. The disputes reportedly escalated, with the constable allegedly beating and harassing her while under the influence of alcohol.

When the woman approached her mother-in-law, father-in-law and brother-in-law for support, they allegedly sided with Desai and subjected her to mental harassment. They reportedly told her to follow the household rules or leave the house.

Reconciliation Failed Despite Undertaking

As the disputes intensified, the woman left her matrimonial home with her children in 2019 and moved to her parental home.

In July 2023, community leaders intervened to broker a reconciliation between the couple. During the process, Desai reportedly gave an undertaking that he would stop consuming alcohol.

However, the woman alleged that her husband behaved appropriately for about a month before resuming drinking and physically abusing her again.

Unable to bear the alleged harassment, she began living at her parental home in the Amraiwadi area in December 2023.

Complaint Lodged After Reconciliation Efforts Failed

With no further reconciliation taking place, the woman approached Amraiwadi police station and filed a complaint against her husband and three in-laws.

The complaint names the constable, his mother, father and younger brother over the alleged physical and mental harassment. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the allegations.
