A 17-year-old girl who had earlier run away with her adult lover, prompting her family to approach the police, was brought back home only to find herself at the centre of another troubling episode — a proposed marriage to a 34-year-old man.

The child marriage was stopped on Monday after the Abhayam 181 team received information about the wedding and reached the venue in Odhav. The team counselled the girl and her family before preventing the marriage from going ahead.

Girl Had Earlier Eloped With Lover

The teenager had allegedly left home with Sunil Kumar Parmar after the two developed a relationship.

According to the case details, she had met Parmar while she was visiting her uncle's house in Gondal with her parents. The two later remained in contact over mobile phone.

Police said the girl had allegedly told Parmar that she wanted him to take her away and did not want to go elsewhere.

On May 18, 2026, Parmar allegedly came to Ahmedabad and took the minor away. As her whereabouts remained unknown, her mother approached Odhav police and lodged a complaint under various sections, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police subsequently arrested Parmar and obtained his remand. He was later sent to jail after the remand period ended.

Brought Back Home, Then Marriage Plan Emerged

While the case involving Parmar was pending, the teenager was brought back to her family.

On Monday, however, Abhayam 181 received information that the 17-year-old was being married. The proposed marriage was reportedly with a 34-year-old man, despite the girl being a minor.

The Abhayam team immediately reached the wedding venue and counselled the girl and her family, following which the marriage was stopped.

The intervention turned the episode into a stark sequence: a minor who had earlier left home with an adult lover was brought back, only to face a proposed marriage to another adult man while still below the legal age of marriage.

Girl Asked To Choose Where She Wanted To Stay

After the marriage was stopped, the Abhayam team asked the girl where she wanted to stay. She expressed a desire to stay at a Nari Sarankshan Griha.

She was subsequently taken to the Odhav Nari Sarankshan Griha. Her statement was recorded on Tuesday, after which she was handed over to her mother, officials said.

Former Lover Gets Conditional Bail

Meanwhile, Parmar had moved a bail application through advocate Ayaz Sheikh.

The defence argued that there was a four-day delay in filing the complaint and that the accused was arrested 44 days after the alleged incident. It also submitted that the investigation had been completed, that the two had been in a relationship and that there was no likelihood of the accused tampering with evidence or threatening witnesses.

The defence further said Parmar had no previous criminal record and would comply with conditions imposed by the court.

After hearing both sides, the court granted him conditional bail against a bond of ₹1 lakh.

The Abhayam team's intervention, meanwhile, prevented the proposed marriage of the 17-year-old and brought the issue of child marriage back into focus.
