Ahmedabad’s long-awaited Metro link to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has moved a step closer to construction, with a ₹859.25 crore contract awarded for civil works on the proposed 6 km corridor from Koteshwar Road to the airport.

The project, part of Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2A, will feature four elevated stations and one underground station, with direct access to Airport Terminals 1 and 2 planned through lifts, escalators and stairs. Ground-level construction is expected to begin in the coming days, after Diwali.

The successful bidder quoted ₹859.25 crore against the estimated contract cost of ₹879.27 crore, coming in 2.28% below the estimate.

Five Stations Planned on the Airport Corridor

The approximately 6 km route will comprise a 4.97 km elevated stretch and a 1.01 km underground section.

The four elevated stations planned along the corridor are:

  • Ashram Road
  • Koteshwar Ancient Temple
  • Sabarmati River
  • Sardarnagar

An underground station will be built near the airport, with a tunnel planned from Taj Circle towards the airport. Passengers will be able to access Terminals 1 and 2 from the underground station using lifts, escalators and stairs.

Underground Tunnel and Utility Work

The underground section will include a 1.01 km twin cut-and-cover tunnel, a ramp and the underground station.

Utility-shifting work for the project is nearly complete. With the civil works contract now awarded, construction is expected to move forward on the ground.

The airport corridor is intended to provide air travellers with an additional public transport option and improve connectivity between the airport and the wider Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network.

Airport Metro Project Costs ₹2,169 Crore

The Union Cabinet approved the airport corridor under Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2A on June 10, 2026.

The total estimated project cost stands at ₹2,169.04 crore, including interest during construction. The ₹859.25 crore contract covers the civil works component, rather than the entire project cost.

Once the corridor becomes operational, the combined Metro network across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar is expected to extend to 77.63 km.

Metro Link Expected to Ease Airport Travel

The new corridor will give passengers an alternative to road transport for reaching the airport, potentially reducing dependence on private vehicles and taxis.

The connection is also expected to benefit residents and employees in areas along the route, improving access to the airport and the wider Metro system. The actual impact on travel times and traffic will depend on the corridor's completion and operational schedule.
