A 28-year-old perfume trader from Ahmedabad has accused his landlord of withholding ₹2.36 lakh paid as a security deposit after allegedly backing out of a rental agreement, citing his son’s return from the United States.

Riyaz Khan Nawab Khan Pathan, who runs N K Perfume near Lal Darwaza, lodged a complaint at Karanj police station on October 16, alleging that the landlord failed to return the money despite repeated assurances.

According to the complaint, Pathan lives with his family in a rented house and was looking for another property when a broker, identified as Farooqbhai Multani, showed him a house in the Karanj area.

Pathan subsequently met the landlord, Mohammad Khan Usman Khan Pathan, who allegedly offered the house at a monthly rent of ₹3,000 and demanded a security deposit of ₹3 lakh.

₹2.36 Lakh Paid Through Transfers, Cash

The complainant alleged that he paid ₹2,36,500 towards the deposit on June 15. Of this amount, ₹85,900 was transferred online to the landlord, while ₹1.50 lakh was paid in cash to the broker.

Pathan told police that he had not moved into the house when the landlord informed him that his son was returning from the US and would need the property to live in. The landlord allegedly said he could no longer rent out the house.

Pathan then sought a refund, saying he would not be taking the property on rent. The landlord allegedly assured him that the money would be returned when convenient.

Trader Alleges Repeated Assurances, No Refund

According to the complaint, Pathan eventually moved into the house and was living there when he approached the police. He alleged that the landlord had still not returned the ₹2.36 lakh despite repeated assurances.

Pathan accused the landlord of inducing him to pay the deposit on the assurance that the house would be rented to him.

Karanj police have received the complaint and are investigating the allegations.
