22-Year-Old Ahmedabad Man Hangs To Death After Neighbour Harasses Him Over Water Dispute

A 22-year-old man died by suicide in Bapunagar after allegedly facing physical assault, threats and repeated phone calls from a neighbour following a minor dispute over spilled water in Gomtipur, police said.

The Bapunagar police have registered a case of abetment to suicide and criminal intimidation against the neighbour following a complaint by the deceased's father and receipt of the post-mortem report.

Dispute Began Over Spilled Water In Gomtipur

According to the complaint, the incident began around 10 am on July 18 at Juni Kasturbhai Ni Chali in Gomtipur.

Kiran, son of vegetable vendor Pratikbhai Hansrajbhai Patni, was filling a bucket from a water drum outside his house when some water allegedly spilled towards the residence of his neighbour, Montubhai Jayantibhai Patni.

The incident reportedly led to an argument. Montu allegedly abused Kiran and assaulted him, slapping him and hitting him with punches and kicks.

He also allegedly threatened Kiran and told him to “go die” or that he would kill him.

Youth Taken To Relative’s House In Bapunagar

After learning about the confrontation, Kiran's family reportedly took him to the house of his brother-in-law, Kanubhai Patni, at Radharaman Flats in Bapunagar to keep him away from the dispute.

However, according to the complaint, the harassment allegedly continued over the phone.

At around 12.30 pm, Montu allegedly called Kiran and repeatedly questioned why he had not died yet.

Police said the calls allegedly left Kiran distressed.

Family Rushes Him To Civil Hospital

At around 3.15 pm, Kiran was found hanging inside a room at Block J, Flat No. 407, Radharaman Flats.

His family immediately alerted emergency services and took him to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital in a 108 ambulance. Doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The family subsequently performed his funeral.

Police Register Case After Post-Mortem Report

After receiving the post-mortem report, Kiran's father filed a complaint at Bapunagar Police Station on October 5.

Police have registered a case against Montubhai Jayantibhai Patni under provisions relating to abetment to suicide and criminal intimidation and have launched an investigation into the allegations.

The police are examining the circumstances surrounding the dispute, the alleged assault and threats, as well as the phone calls made to Kiran before his death.
