A 42-year-old man was arrested by Gomtipur police for allegedly selling marijuana near a dargah inside Chartoda Cemetery, with officers seizing 552 grams of cannabis during a raid.
The accused, Abdulwasim alias Chuha Abdulsatar Shaikh, was allegedly selling marijuana in small packets near the Hazrat Mastan Jalal Shah Dargah. Police said he had been using the cemetery premises to store the drug and prepare packets for retail sale.
The seized marijuana was valued at ₹27,600. Police also recovered ₹1,400 in cash, 24 transparent plastic zipper bags and a digital weighing scale. The total value of the seized items was estimated at ₹29,200.
Police raid cemetery after receiving tip-off
Gomtipur police received information that Shaikh, who had previously been arrested in a marijuana-related case, was selling cannabis inside Chartoda Cemetery.
A police team reached the spot, cordoned off the area and apprehended him. Shaikh is a resident of Sutharwada Chhapra, opposite Ashoknagar in Gomtipur.
During the search, officers found a black plastic bag containing a plant-based substance. A preliminary chemical test confirmed it was marijuana. The consignment weighed 552 grams.
Accused allegedly brought drug consignment from Surat
During questioning, Shaikh allegedly told police that he had purchased the marijuana from an unidentified person living near Ashwinikumar railway crossing in Surat. He had reportedly brought the consignment to Ahmedabad to sell it in smaller quantities.
Police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against Shaikh and the unidentified supplier. Further investigation is underway to trace the supplier and establish the source of the cannabis.
Cash, 24 packets and weighing scale seized
Apart from the marijuana, police recovered 24 small zipper bags and a digital weighing scale, which were allegedly used to prepare and sell the drug in retail quantities.
The ₹1,400 found in Shaikh's possession was also suspected to be money collected from marijuana sales, according to police.
The entire operation was videographed and documented through the e-Sakshya application.
