Ahmedabad LCB Arrests Two Habitual Snatchers Within Hours of Purse Theft from Moving Autorickshaw

The Ahmedabad City Local Crime Branch (LCB) arrested two alleged habitual offenders within hours of a purse and mobile phone being snatched from a woman travelling in a moving autorickshaw in the Kagdapith area. Police recovered stolen property and a motorcycle allegedly used in the offence, with the total seizure valued at ₹1.70 lakh.

The accused were identified as Tanveer Yusufbhai Sheikh (21) and Fizan alias Chuha Mohammadfaim Syed (21), both residents of Rahmati Maholla in Danilimda.

LCB tracked suspects after receiving specific input

According to the police, the Zone-6 LCB team was patrolling the area when they received information that the two suspects were travelling on a white Suzuki Burgman motorcycle and would pass through the railway yard towards Raipur after descending the Khokhra Bridge.

Acting on the tip-off, officers set up surveillance near the railway yard and intercepted the motorcycle. Both men were detained on the spot.

Property worth ₹1.70 lakh recovered

The investigation led to the recovery of stolen items allegedly linked to the snatching incident. The seized property included:

  • Samsung S26 mobile phone valued at ₹1 lakh
  • Samsung Galaxy M35 5G valued at ₹10,000
  • Louis Vuitton-branded ladies’ purse valued at ₹10,000
  • Another purse valued at ₹500
  • Six debit and credit cards
  • A pen drive worth ₹200
  • Suzuki Burgman motorcycle valued at ₹50,000

Police said the motorcycle had been borrowed from a friend and was allegedly used to carry out the crime.

Women travelling alone were allegedly targeted

Investigators said the accused would allegedly roam around the Kalupur and Maninagar areas during the night and early morning hours, specifically looking for women travelling alone in autorickshaws.

Their alleged method involved riding alongside a moving autorickshaw, snatching the passenger’s purse or bag, and fleeing immediately.

Both accused have criminal history

The LCB said both men had previously been arrested in theft cases registered at Kagdapith, Khadia, Maninagar and Narol police stations. Police also claimed they had earlier been detained under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA) and lodged in Surat jail.

The accused were detained under provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and handed over to the Kagdapith police for further investigation. A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the autorickshaw purse snatching.
