A 15-year-old labourer died after suffering an electric shock at a construction site in Ahmedabad’s Jagatpur area on October 11, prompting police to book the project’s builder and contractor over alleged negligence. The teenager’s family has alleged that workers were made to work without basic safety measures and that exposed electrical wiring was left at the site.

Teenager Collapses While Carrying Iron Frame

The deceased, Sachin Garasia, had arrived at the Blue Bell construction project with his elder sister and 10 other labourers after a supervisor arranged work for them. The group had gathered near the Ghatlodia water tank before travelling to the site around 9 am, according to the complaint filed by Sachin’s sister.

Sachin was assigned to carry iron scaffolding frames, locally known as ‘iron horses’, around the site, while his sister worked on plastering.

The complaint alleges that Sachin suffered an electric shock while carrying a frame with another worker, identified as Rajesh. Workers later found him lying on the floor near a ground-floor shop.

His sister alleged that an exposed wire connected to a grinding machine was lying near a switchboard on a damp floor. Sachin reportedly suffered burns on his feet after coming into contact with the wire.

He was taken by autorickshaw to a hospital near Ganesh Genesis, where a doctor declared him dead at 11.13 am, the complaint states.

Builder, Contractor Accused of Negligence

Sachin’s sister accused contractor Kantibhai Ramjibhai Mistry, site supervisor Nanjibhai Solanki and the builder responsible for the project of failing to ensure workers’ safety.

Chandkheda Police Inspector J K Makwana said the contractor and builder had been booked and that no arrests had been made so far.

Police are also examining the circumstances under which the 15-year-old was employed at the construction site, including how he came to be engaged in labour work despite being a minor.

The investigation is under way to establish the circumstances of the electrocution and examine the allegations of negligence.
