Ahmedabad: Gold and Silver Ornaments Worth ₹5.78 Lakh Stolen From Chandkheda House

Gold and silver ornaments worth ₹5.78 lakh were allegedly stolen from a house in Chandkheda while the family was away in Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The burglary took place at the residence of Swetaben Pandey, 35, in Tejendranagar near Uma Bhavani Gate in Chandkheda, between the morning of August 22 and the evening of September 8.

Family Away for Nearly a Fortnight

According to the complaint, Pandey lives with her family, while her husband, who had been staying in Saudi Arabia for business, had returned to India during the period.

The family left Ahmedabad for their native village in Sakri, in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district, on August 22. Before leaving, Pandey, her nephew and other family members locked the house.

Police said a tenant, identified as Laxman alias Akash Ahir, has been living on the upper floor of the property for about a year.

Tenant Alerts Family About Open Door

The family returned to Ahmedabad on September 8 after spending around two weeks in their native village. While Pandey was on her way home, her tenant allegedly called and informed her that the door of the house was open.

When the family reached the house at around 7.45 pm, they allegedly found both main doors forced open. Cupboards inside the house were also open and household belongings were scattered.

The tenant told Pandey that he had remained awake until around midnight and, when he came downstairs at about 6 am, found the house door broken and open.

Jewellery Missing From Safe

Pandey subsequently checked a safe where the family had kept its jewellery and found several gold and silver ornaments missing.

The stolen items allegedly included a gold mangalsutra, earrings, necklace, rope-design gold chain, gold rings, mang tika, nose ornaments, bangles, silver rings and anklets, among other jewellery.

The total value of the stolen ornaments has been estimated at ₹5.78 lakh.

Police Probe Underway

Police said unidentified thieves allegedly broke the lock, entered the house, forced open the safe and fled with the jewellery.

A case has been registered against unknown persons, and further investigation is underway.
