Ahmedabad Firecracker Shops Sealed After Ramol Blast May Reopen With Quantity Limits, AMC Sets Conditions

The AmdavadMunicipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to allow the reopening of around 60 firecracker shops sealed across the city after the deadly Ramol firecracker factory blast, but traders will have to provide assurances on maintaining stock limits and following safety rules.

The decision came after repeated representations from former BJP corporators and local leaders seeking relief for seasonal firecracker traders ahead of the festive season.

Firecracker Shops Sealed After Ramol Tragedy

The AMC had launched a major inspection drive after a massive explosion at a firecracker factory in Ahmedabad’s Ramol area claimed 12 lives.

Following the incident, the civic body’s estate and fire departments carried out checks on firecracker manufacturing units, storage godowns and temporary sales outlets across the city.

Around 60 firecracker shops, including those operating in the old city areas, were sealed after authorities found violations related to illegal construction and safety norms.

Traders Seek Relief Ahead of Festive Season

After the sealing drive affected seasonal firecracker businesses, several traders approached local political representatives for support.

Former BJP corporators and leaders submitted representations to AMC officials, including the Mayor and Standing Committee Chairman, requesting that the sealed shops be reopened.

The issue was later discussed in the AMC Town Planning Committee meeting.

Shops to Reopen With Safety Undertaking

Town Planning Committee Chairman Bhajesh Patel said sealed firecracker shops engaged in seasonal business would be considered for reopening after traders submit an undertaking to follow prescribed rules.

Traders will have to provide a guarantee that the quantity of firecrackers stored and sold will remain within permitted limits. Officials have also been instructed to ensure strict compliance with safety standards.

AMC Tightens Action Against Misuse of RTI

In another decision, the AMC Town Planning Committee has moved against individuals allegedly misusing the Right to Information (RTI) Act to target illegal constructions and demand money from builders.

Committee Chairman Bhajesh Patel said complaints had been received that some people were repeatedly seeking similar RTI information about unauthorised constructions and allegedly using the details for extortion.

Officials have been asked to prepare a list of such individuals along with their RTI application details so that legal action can be considered.

Parking Plots to Get Annual Rent Revision

The Town Planning Committee also approved changes related to parking plots under the Anjali Overbridge, Pallav Overbridge and AEC Overbridge.

The committee approved the projects with a condition of a 5 per cent annual rent increase, ensuring better revenue generation for the civic body.

Officials have also been directed to issue fresh tenders before the completion of three-year parking contracts to avoid extensions and prevent valuable public spaces from remaining unused.
