Ahmedabad Enters India’s Top 10 Districts By Vehicle Count As 29 Lakh Vehicles Add To Traffic Woes

Ahmedabad has entered the list of India’s top 10 districts with the highest number of registered active vehicles, highlighting the growing pressure on the city’s roads and worsening traffic congestion. With 29,05,265 vehicles currently on record, Ahmedabad now ranks among the country’s busiest urban centres in terms of vehicle population.

The sharp rise in the number of vehicles reflects the increasing dependence on private transport, with many households now owning more than one vehicle. As a result, traffic congestion has become a major challenge across the city.

Ahmedabad tops Gujarat in vehicle population

According to the latest vehicle registration data, Ahmedabad has the highest number of active vehicles in Gujarat. Surat follows in second place with 20,65,074 vehicles, while Rajkot and Vadodara occupy the third and fourth positions respectively.

Of Ahmedabad’s total vehicle population, 9,14,743 vehicles are registered in Ahmedabad East alone.

Bengaluru leads the national list

Across India, Bengaluru has the highest number of active vehicles with 73.24 lakh, followed by Pune with 44.26 lakh and Chennai with 31.48 lakh.

Ahmedabad’s vehicle population has now placed it among the country’s top districts, alongside several major metropolitan regions.

The steady increase in vehicle ownership has intensified traffic problems across Ahmedabad. With private vehicles becoming common in most households, roads are witnessing heavier traffic volumes, leading to frequent congestion on key routes.
