A 63-year-old woman was allegedly cheated out of gold jewellery worth ₹75,000 by three unidentified persons, including a woman, who lured her with the promise of handing over ₹2 lakh to ₹2.50 lakh in cash in Ahmedabad’s Ramol area.
The incident took place on the afternoon of October 28 on the road from Nirant Crossroads towards Ratanpura village. The accused allegedly used a handkerchief-wrapped bundle of paper, claiming it contained a large amount of cash, to persuade the woman to hand over her jewellery.
The victim, Nirmalaben Manoharbhai Patil, a resident of Krishnakunj Society on Vastral Road, provides oil massages to young children. She had got off a rickshaw at Nirant Crossroads for some work and was walking along the road when the trio approached her.
Accused Used ATM Enquiry to Gain Her Trust
According to the complaint, an unidentified man, a woman and a boy stopped Patil under the pretext of asking for the location of an ATM. They then took her behind some parked vehicles.
During the conversation, the woman claimed she was carrying a large amount of cash and did not want to keep it with her because of the risk involved. The boy accompanying her showed Patil a bundle wrapped in a handkerchief and pulled out a ₹500 note to make it appear that the bundle contained money.
The woman allegedly offered to give Patil between ₹2 lakh and ₹2.50 lakh from the bundle in exchange for the gold jewellery she was wearing.
Trio Fled With 1.5 Tolas of Gold
Believing their claims, Patil handed over approximately 1.5 tolas of gold jewellery, valued at ₹75,000. The jewellery included a mangalsutra with black beads and a gold pendant, along with a pair of earrings.
The trio then left, saying they were going to have a snack. When they failed to return after a considerable wait, Patil opened the handkerchief and discovered that the bundle contained pieces of paper rather than cash.
She subsequently approached Ramol Police Station and lodged a complaint. Police have registered a case against the unidentified woman and two men and launched an investigation.
